Travelling with your mobile phone is convenient, but make sure you take all the necessary precautions for taking your mobile phone on holiday so you aren't caught unawares. By reading our guide on 'mobile phones abroad' you'll be fully informed, phone set up and ready to go.

Travelling With Your Mobile Phone ...

Chances are you'll be travelling with your mobile phone. Taking your mobile phone abroad is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family (and now make up one of the top 5 things taken away). But don't assume that by taking your mobile phone on holiday it will work. You need your handset to be activated for International Roaming - read on...

Getting Ready To Go ...

Consider the following when you take your mobile phone abroad:

  • Your phone needs to be activated for International Roaming for it to work overseas. Do this well in advance of travel as it can take around 14 days. You can do this by contacting your Network provider.

  • Some countries require a different handset to those (commonly) used in the UK. America for example requires a tri-band handset.

  • When setting up your International Roaming facilities check how much calls will actually cost you. Many charge extremely high rates and it's worth looking into properly.

  • It may be that there are special deals offered by your Network provider - make sure you ask so you can get the very best deal available.

  • State what country you are actually travelling to as some Network providers have deals over and above their normal International Roaming for specific countries.
Use the UK mobile phone network providers' customer services numbers below to do your research on who does the best deals:

  UK Network Providers
  O2 0870 225 7879
  Orange 0800 079 0006
T-Mobile 0845 412 5000
Three 08707 330 333
Virgin 0845 6000 789
Vodafone 08700 700 191
Tesco Mobile 0845 301 44 55

Using Your Mobile A Lot...

Your Network provider may offer cheaper calls abroad for a monthly fee. This is can be cost effective if you are a frequent overseas traveller. Check how much this would cost against your regular tariff and how long you would have to be committed into the contract for.

Sometimes it can be cheaper to use an alternative SIM card in your phone (a SIM card is the small card slotted into the back of your phone) that is set up or making and taking calls from abroad.

Many UK retailers sell alternative SIM cards for use on foreign networks. You will also find these for sale at international airports. Do be aware that SIM cards can have an expiry date so don't buy an expensive one if you are leaving a long gap between travelling.

Alternatively you can buy international SIM cards to take and use abroad with your handset. SIM for Travel are such a provider - click this link for more unofficial information or to buy:

And don't forget to pack an electrical adapter for your mobile phone charger otherwise you won't be able to use it when the battery has run out.

You've Arrived ...

Once you've arrived at your foreign destination your phone will automatically be connected to a local transmitter. Even though it is connected to this local transmitter your phone still believes it is UK based. Therefore it effectively routes your calls via the UK. So for example - a UK caller making a call on their UK handset from France, to a UK handset also holidaying in France, will be routed back to the UK - that's a whopping 1,800 miles! Hence why it costs so much for calls overseas. What's more, the person receiving the call will also be charged to pick up the call.

Now you can understand why we offer the above help and advice on securing the best International Roaming package for you, well before you travel.

Very Important Numbers...

To be fully prepared when you are travelling abroad add the following numbers into your mobile phone before you travel:

  • Your travel insurance provider's contact numbers

  • Telephone number of the nearest British Embassy to where you are going to be staying

  • Telephone number of your Hotel / Tour Operator

Important Numbers - Government Offices and Agencies
  Foreign & Commonwealth Office Enquiries +44 (0) 207 008 1500
  Services for Briton’s overseas +44 (0) 207 008 0210
Travel Advice +44 (0) 845 850 2829

Mobile Security ...

Make a note of your mobile's serial number (also known as the IMEI number). Your mobile telephone number, along with your Network provider's customer services number. It's also worth contacting your Network provider to see if they will enquire any other unofficial information from you i.e. password, security code or such like.

This way, if your mobile is lost or stolen you will be able to contact your Network provider and get your phone cancelled with immediate effect.

If you are taking your mobile phone abroad and want it insured should it get lost or stolen make sure you have travel insurance that covers mobile phones - please note that policies do not cover mobile phones as standard.
